Navratri wishes for family (9)
Nine nights of prayer, music and lamps, and all of us under one roof. Happy Navratri, family.
May Maa Durga keep our home safe, our hearts calm and our kitchen full. Happy Navratri.
The kalash is placed, the akhand jyoti is lit and the house smells of incense. Navratri is home again.
To my mother, who fasts for all of us: may Maa Durga give you strength every one of these nine days.
Happy Navratri from [Your name] and family. May the Goddess bless your home with health and peace.
Nine days, nine colours, one family. Let us make every day of Navratri count.
May the little girls we honour at Kanya Puja grow up strong, and may our home always respect them.
Wherever we are this Navratri, the same aarti joins us together. Jai Mata Di.
Happy Navratri. Thank you for filling these nine nights with your songs and your cooking.

About Navratri
Navratri means nine nights. It honours Goddess Durga in her nine forms, called the Navadurga, from the first day of the bright half of Ashvin, in September or October. The tenth day is Dussehra, or Vijayadashami.
The festival remembers the Goddess's victory over the demon Mahishasura after nine days of battle, the victory of good over evil. Each day is given to one form of the Goddess, from Shailputri to Siddhidatri, and many people wear a set colour for each day.
Families place a kalash, keep an akhand jyoti lamp burning, fast or eat simple vrat food, and honour young girls as the Goddess in Kanya Puja on the eighth or ninth day. Gujarat dances garba and dandiya every night, Bengal celebrates the last days as Durga Puja, Karnataka keeps Mysuru Dasara and doll displays, and Telangana has Bathukamma.
Navratri is celebrated across India and Nepal, where the same season is Dashain, and garba nights are now held by Indian communities in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, the Gulf and beyond.
How people celebrate Navratri
- Ghatasthapana, placing the kalash on day one
- An akhand jyoti lamp kept burning for nine days
- Fasting with sabudana, kuttu and fruit
- Garba and dandiya nights
- A colour for each of the nine days
- Kanya Puja on Ashtami or Navami
- Doll displays (golu, bombe habba) in the south
How to wish well
- Send your wish on the first morning, and greet again on Ashtami and Dussehra.
- "Jai Mata Di" is warm and simple for anyone who celebrates; "Happy Navratri" works for everyone.
- Gujarati friends love garba wishes; Bengali friends will be in the middle of Durga Puja by the sixth day.
- Many people fast, so wishes about food are best kept to fasting treats.
- Funny wishes about dance moves and fasting snacks are fine; keep jokes away from the Goddess.
