About Mattu Pongal

Mattu Pongal is the third day of the Pongal festival, the day after Thai Pongal. It is a day of thanks to the cattle that plough the fields and give milk.

Cows and bulls are bathed, their horns are painted and capped, and they wear bells, garlands and turmeric and kumkum on their foreheads. Families cook pongal for them and offer it before anyone else eats. In some villages bull-taming sports are held on this day or the next.

Many women also keep Kanu Pidi on the morning of Mattu Pongal, placing small balls of coloured rice on a leaf and praying for their brothers. The same day is Kanuma in Telugu homes.

How people celebrate Mattu Pongal

  • Bathing and decorating cattle
  • Painting horns in bright colours
  • Bells and garlands for cows and bulls
  • Pongal fed to the cattle first
