About Maharashtra Day

Maharashtra Day, or Maharashtra Din, is celebrated on 1 May. On this day in 1960 the state of Maharashtra was formed for Marathi speakers, when the old Bombay State was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The state came after the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, and on this day people remember with respect those who lost their lives in it, at Hutatma Chowk in Mumbai.

There is a parade at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, flag hoisting across the state, cultural shows and Marathi songs. It is a state holiday, and 1 May is also Labour Day.
