- 1 May every year
- State formed in 1960
- Mumbai is the capital
Where it began
After independence, Marathi and Gujarati speakers shared the large Bombay State. Many Marathi speakers wished for a state of their own, with Mumbai as its capital.
This wish became the Samyukta Maharashtra movement in the 1950s. Writers, poets, workers and farmers joined it. People who lost their lives during the movement are remembered at Hutatma Chowk, the Martyrs' Square, in Mumbai.
The Bombay Reorganisation Act of 1960 created two states. On 1 May 1960 Maharashtra and Gujarat were born, and both keep 1 May as their foundation day.
