About Losar

Losar is the New Year of the Tibetan calendar, celebrated by Tibetan Buddhists and Himalayan peoples in Ladakh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Nepal and Bhutan, and by Tibetan communities around the world. It usually falls in February or early March.

The days before Losar are for cleaning the house and letting go of the old year. On the eve, families eat guthuk, a noodle soup with dough balls that hide little symbols for fun fortunes. On the first morning, people offer prayers, visit monasteries and greet each other with "Tashi Delek", a wish of good fortune.

Homes are decorated with new prayer flags and a chemar box of barley flour and roasted grain, and families share khapse biscuits, butter tea and visits to friends. In Ladakh the local Losar is kept about two months earlier, in winter, and in Nepal communities such as the Sherpa, Tamang and Gurung keep their own Losar days.

How to wish well
