About Karma Puja
Karma Puja, or Karam Parab, is a harvest and nature festival of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal and Assam's tea gardens. It falls on the eleventh day of the bright half of Bhadrapada, in August or September.
Families honour Karam Devta through a branch of the Karam tree, planted in the courtyard or village ground. Sisters fast and pray for the well-being of their brothers, and girls grow jawa, small baskets of sprouted grain, in the days before the festival.
At night the village gathers around the Karam branch. The story of the brothers Karma and Dharma is told, and people dance and sing to the mandar drum till late. The next day the branch is given to a river.
