About Holika Dahan

Holika Dahan is the bonfire night on the full moon of Phalgun, the evening before the colours of Holi. Many people call it Choti Holi.

It remembers the story of Prahlad, a young devotee of Lord Vishnu. His aunt Holika sat with him in a fire, but his faith kept him safe while she was burned. The fire stands for the end of evil and pride.

Families gather wood and cow dung cakes for days, tie a cotton thread around the pyre, offer coconut, new wheat ears and grains, and walk around the fire with prayers. The ash is taken home as a blessing.

How people celebrate Holika Dahan

  • Building the pyre in the lane or square
  • Tying a sacred thread around it
  • Offering coconut, wheat ears and grains
  • Walking around the fire in prayer
  • Taking home a pinch of the ash

How to wish well

  • Wish people in the evening, before the bonfire is lit.
  • A message about good winning over evil, or about Prahlad's faith, fits the night well.
  • Keep it devotional; save the funny colour jokes for Holi morning.
