About Hariyali Teej

Hariyali Teej falls on the third day of the bright half of Shravan, in July or August, in the middle of the monsoon. Hariyali means greenery, and the day celebrates the rains and the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Women wear green sarees and bangles, apply mehendi, swing on decorated jhoolas hung from trees and sing Sawan folk songs. Married women receive sinjara, gifts of clothes, bangles and sweets from their parents' home, and many keep a fast and pray to Parvati for a happy marriage.

Ghewar, a honeycomb sweet, is the taste of the season. Jaipur holds a grand Teej procession of the Goddess, and the day is loved across Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Nepal.
