About Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima is the full moon of Ashadha, in June or July, a day to honour teachers and spiritual guides. Guru means the one who removes darkness.

It is also called Vyasa Purnima, after Sage Vyasa, who is said to have been born on this day and to have arranged the Vedas and written the Mahabharata. Buddhists remember the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath on this full moon, and Jains honour Lord Mahavira's first disciple.

Students visit their teachers with flowers and fruit, disciples gather at ashrams, music and dance students honour their gurus, and many children touch their parents' feet as their first teachers.

Guru Purnima is kept across India and Nepal, where it is also a school holiday for teachers, and by Hindu, Buddhist and Jain communities around the world.
