About Gujarat Day

Gujarat Day, or Gujarat Sthapana Divas, is celebrated on 1 May. On this day in 1960 the state of Gujarat was formed for Gujarati speakers, when the old Bombay State was divided into Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The state came after the Mahagujarat movement. Gujarat is known for its spirit of trade, its food, Navratri garba, the lions of Gir, the white desert of Kutch, and as the home of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The day is marked with flag hoisting, cultural programmes and Gujarati music across the state, and by Gujarati communities around the world, from East Africa to the UK and the US.
