The Gita's seven hundred verses, in eighteen chapters, teach duty done without selfish desire, a calm mind in joy and sorrow, devotion and the eternal nature of the soul. It is one of the most read and translated books of Hindu thought.

Devotees read or chant the whole Gita, hold talks and quizzes, fast for the ekadashi and visit Krishna temples. Kurukshetra in Haryana hosts the International Gita Mahotsav with lamps on the Brahma Sarovar.
