About Ganga Dussehra
Ganga Dussehra celebrates the day the river Ganga came down from heaven to earth. It falls on the tenth day of the bright half of Jyeshtha, in May or June, at the height of summer.
King Bhagiratha is said to have prayed for years to bring the Ganga down to free the souls of his ancestors, and Lord Shiva caught the mighty river in his matted hair so that its fall would not flood the earth. Dashahara means the removal of ten sins, which a holy dip on this day is believed to wash away.
Devotees bathe in the Ganga at Haridwar, Rishikesh, Prayagraj, Varanasi and Garhmukteshwar, float leaf-cup lamps with flowers, join the evening Ganga aarti and give water, fruit, fans and sherbet in charity.
