About Day of the Dead

Día de Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition on 1 and 2 November when families lovingly remember those who have died. It is a celebration of life and memory, not a sad or frightening day.

It blends Indigenous customs of honouring ancestors with the Christian days of All Saints and All Souls. UNESCO lists it as part of the world's intangible heritage.

Families build an ofrenda, a home altar with photos, candles, bright orange marigolds, papel picado, pan de muerto and the favourite foods of their loved ones. They visit and decorate graves, share stories and music, and paint colourful calaveras (decorative skulls) as art.

How people celebrate Day of the Dead

  • Building an ofrenda
  • Orange marigold petals (cempasúchil)
  • Pan de muerto
  • Candles and copal
  • Visiting and decorating graves
  • Sugar skulls and papel picado
  • Sharing stories of loved ones

How to wish well

  • "Feliz Día de Muertos" is a normal greeting; the day is a joyful remembrance.
  • Mention a loved one by name, or a memory, food or song they loved; that is the heart of the day.
  • Be gentle with someone who lost a person this year; a warm, simple message is best.
  • It is not a Mexican Halloween. Keep jokes and spooky words out of your wishes.
