About Dashain

Dashain is the longest and most important festival in Nepal, lasting fifteen days in the autumn month of Ashwin (September or October). It celebrates the victory of good over evil, remembered through the goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura.

It begins with Ghatasthapana, when barley seeds are sown in a sacred pot to grow the golden jamara. The seventh day is Fulpati, the eighth and ninth are days of worship of the goddess, and the tenth, Vijaya Dashami, is the main day.

On Vijaya Dashami, elders put red tika on the foreheads of younger family members, place jamara behind their ears and give blessings and a little money. People travel across the country to receive tika from their elders, fly kites, ride bamboo swings called ping and share big family meals. The festival ends on Kojagrat Purnima, the full moon.

How people celebrate Dashain

  • Sowing jamara on Ghatasthapana
  • Receiving tika and jamara from elders
  • Dakshina from elders
  • Flying kites
  • Bamboo swings (ping)
  • Family feasts and new clothes
  • Visiting relatives for days after tika

How to wish well

  • Say "Vijaya Dashami ko hardik shubhakamana" (Heartfelt wishes for Vijaya Dashami) or simply "Happy Dashain".
  • Elders give blessings and younger people receive them; a message to an elder can ask for their blessing.
  • Many Nepalis abroad cannot go home; a warm message saying you miss the family tika means a lot.
  • Some communities do not celebrate Dashain; a general greeting of peace is kind for them.

Questions about Dashain
