About Buddha Purnima

Buddha Purnima, also called Vesak or Buddha Jayanti, falls on the full moon of the month of Vaishakha, in April or May. Buddhists remember three events on this one day: the birth of the Buddha at Lumbini, his enlightenment at Bodh Gaya and his passing at Kushinagar.

Siddhartha Gautama left his palace to understand suffering, and after long meditation under the Bodhi tree he became the Buddha, the awakened one. He taught the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, a middle way of wisdom, kindness and calm.

People visit monasteries and temples, offer flowers, candles and incense, meditate and listen to teachings. Many keep the precepts for the day, eat simple vegetarian food and give to those in need. In Sri Lanka streets glow with Vesak lanterns and free food stalls called dansal.

How people celebrate Buddha Purnima

  • Visiting temples and monasteries

  • Bathing the baby Buddha statue

How to wish well

  • Happy Buddha Purnima, Happy Vesak or a wish for peace all suit the day.
  • A line about peace, kindness, wisdom or the full moon fits well. Lines from the Dhammapada, a public-domain text, are loved.
  • Keep the tone calm and gentle. Avoid jokes about the Buddha or the faith.
