About Bathukamma

Bathukamma is the flower festival of Telangana, celebrated for nine days during Navaratri, from Mahalaya Amavasya (Engili Pula Bathukamma) to Durga Ashtami (Saddula Bathukamma).

Women and girls stack seasonal flowers such as tangedu, gunuka, marigold and lotus in rings into a tall cone called a Bathukamma, which honours Goddess Gauri. In the evening they place them in a circle, clap and sing Bathukamma songs, then float them on a lake or pond.

Each day has its own offering of food, and the last day, Saddula Bathukamma, is the grandest, with sweets like malida and sattu. Bathukamma is Telangana's state festival and is celebrated by Telangana families around the world.

How people celebrate Bathukamma

  • Stacking flowers into a Bathukamma
  • Singing and clapping in a circle
  • Floating the flowers on water

How to wish well

  • Wishes are sent through the nine days, and most of all on Saddula Bathukamma.
