About Bastille Day

Bastille Day, called the Fête nationale or le 14 juillet in France, is the French national day. It remembers the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789 and the Festival of the Federation a year later, which celebrated the unity of the French people.

In Paris, a parade goes down the Champs-Élysées in the morning and fireworks light up the sky over the Eiffel Tower at night. Towns and villages hold their own fireworks, firemen's balls and street dances.

Families enjoy picnics, long lunches and summer evenings outdoors, and French communities around the world celebrate with music, food and the blue, white and red tricolour.
