About Ayudha Pooja

Ayudha Pooja is the ninth day of Navaratri, the day before Vijayadasami. Ayudha means tools or instruments: on this day people honour everything they use to work and learn.

Homes, shops, offices and factories are cleaned. Tools, machines, vehicles, books, pens and musical instruments are decorated with sandal paste, kumkum and flowers and placed before the Goddess. In Tamil Nadu the same day is Saraswati Pooja, so books and instruments rest until Vijayadasami, when learning starts again.

Pori, sundal and fruits are offered and shared, and vehicles get a garland and a pumpkin broken in front of them for safe journeys. The day is celebrated across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka (especially around the Mysuru Dasara), Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
