About Attukal Pongala

Attukal Pongala is the main day of the ten-day festival at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It falls on the Pooram star in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, near the full moon, in February or March.

On that morning, a huge number of women set up small brick hearths along the streets of the city, sometimes for kilometres around the temple. When the temple fire is lit, each woman lights her own hearth from it and cooks pongala, a sweet dish of new rice, jaggery and coconut, in a fresh clay pot as an offering to the Goddess.

Families, neighbours and visitors help with water, shade and food. The offering is blessed by temple priests in the afternoon and taken home as prasadam. Many Malayali families abroad also make pongala at home on the day.
