About Arudra Darisanam

Arudra Darisanam is celebrated on the Thiruvathirai (Ardra) star in the Tamil month of Margazhi, in December or January, near the full moon.

It honours Lord Shiva as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer whose dance keeps the universe in motion. At the Chidambaram temple, the festival ends with the darshan of Nataraja in procession at dawn, drawing huge crowds.

At home, families make Thiruvathirai kali, a sweet of rice and jaggery, and ezhu kari kootu, a stew of seven vegetables. In Kerala the same star is celebrated as Thiruvathira, with the graceful Thiruvathirakali dance by women.

How people celebrate Arudra Darisanam

  • Dawn darshan of Nataraja at Chidambaram
  • Thiruvathirai kali
  • Seven-vegetable kootu
  • Kolam on cold Margazhi mornings
  • Thiruvathirakali dance in Kerala

How to wish well

  • Send wishes early in the morning, when the darshan takes place.
