About Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya, also called Akha Teej, falls on the third day of the bright half of Vaishakha, in April or May. Akshaya means never fading, and anything good begun or given on this day is believed to grow without end.

Many stories meet on this day: the birth of Lord Parashurama, the Ganga coming down to earth, Sudama's visit to Krishna, and the Akshaya Patra, the never-empty vessel given to the Pandavas. Jains remember Lord Rishabhanatha breaking his long fast with sugarcane juice.

Families buy gold or silver, start new businesses, open new account books, hold weddings and housewarmings, and give food, water and clothes in charity. The doors of Badrinath and other Char Dham shrines open around this time.

Akshaya Tritiya is kept across India, especially in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha and the south, and by Indian families abroad.
