Settings and a running countdown are saved on this device only.

How to use the countdown timer

  1. Choose the time

Tap a quick time such as 5 min, type your own hours, minutes and seconds, or switch to To a date for an exam day or a festival.

  2. Start the countdown

Press Start or Space. The time left shows in big digits and in the tab title, so you can work in other tabs.

  3. Hear the alarm

When it reaches zero the alarm rings, the phone buzzes and, if you allowed it, a system notice pops up. Press Stop alarm or Space.

Good to know

  • Press Test sound once to check the volume before a long countdown.
  • Add 1 min gives a little extra time without starting over.
  • Turn on System notice to get an alert even when the browser is behind other windows.
  • A countdown to a date shows days, hours, minutes and seconds left, and keeps counting after a reload.
  • Keys: Space starts, pauses or stops the alarm, R resets, F opens full screen.

Questions people ask

Will the alarm ring if the tab is in the background?

Yes, as long as the browser stays open. Start the timer with a click first, because browsers allow sound only after you have touched the page.

Does it keep time if I switch tabs or lock the phone?

Yes. The timer remembers the moment it started and works out the time from the clock, so it stays right in a background tab and even after a reload. A phone that sleeps may delay the sound until you open it again, so keep the screen on for alarms; the page asks the phone to keep the screen awake while a timer runs.

Can I count down to a date, like an exam or a wedding?

Yes. Choose To a date, pick the date and time, give it a name and press Start. It shows the days, hours, minutes and seconds left.

Where does the alarm sound come from?

The beeps are made by your browser's sound engine, so nothing is downloaded and it works offline once the page has loaded.

Why did I not get a system notice?

Notices need your permission, asked only when you tick the box. If you blocked them once, allow them again in the browser's site settings.
