Yom Kippur blessings and prayers (41)
G'mar chatima tova. May you be sealed in the Book of Life for a good year.
May your fast be easy and your prayers be heard.
May this Day of Atonement bring you forgiveness, peace and a clean heart.
May the gates of prayer stay open for you until the very last moment of Neilah.
May you be sealed for a year of health, kindness and peace.
As we ask forgiveness of God and of each other, may our hearts grow softer and our lives truer.
May the words of Kol Nidre free you from old promises and open the way to new ones you can keep.
May the One who forgives grant you a year of blessing, and may you find it easy to forgive others.
Tzom kal. May your fast be meaningful and your soul renewed.
May the quiet of this holy day bring you closer to what matters most.
May the final shofar blast at sunset carry your prayers up and bring you peace.
May you and your loved ones be written and sealed for life.
May the coming year be one of return: to faith, to family and to our best selves.
May all who fast today be strengthened, and all who cannot fast be comforted.
May we be forgiven for what we did wrong, and given strength to do right.
As the day closes and the gates close, may your name be sealed for good.
May we remember those we have lost at Yizkor with love, and carry their goodness forward.
May this day of stillness bring healing to every broken relationship.
May the Lord bless you and keep you, and grant you peace in the year ahead.
May your soul feel light at the end of this long and holy day.
May the prayers of the whole community rise together and be answered for good.
May you find in this solemn day the courage to begin again.
May your heart be heard even when your words fall short.
May the coming year be sealed with compassion for you and for all.
May the Holy One grant atonement, and may we grant one another forgiveness.
Have an easy fast, my friend. If I let you down this year, I am truly sorry. G'mar chatima tova.

About Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the Jewish year. It falls on the 10th of Tishrei, ten days after Rosh Hashanah, and closes the Ten Days of Awe.
It is a day of fasting, prayer and asking forgiveness. Jewish tradition holds that the judgement written on Rosh Hashanah is sealed on Yom Kippur, so people ask forgiveness of anyone they have wronged before the day begins, then of God through the day.
It begins at sunset with the Kol Nidre service and lasts about 25 hours. Adults in good health fast from food and water, many wear white, and most of the day is spent in the synagogue, ending with the Neilah prayer and a single long blast of the shofar. Families then break the fast together with a light meal.
In Israel the whole country goes quiet: shops, radio and television stop and the roads are empty of cars.
How people celebrate Yom Kippur
- Asking forgiveness before the day
- A 25 hour fast
- Kol Nidre on the eve
- Wearing white
- Yizkor prayers for loved ones
- Neilah and the final shofar
- Breaking the fast with family
How to wish well
- Yom Kippur is not a happy holiday. Do not say Happy Yom Kippur. Say G'mar chatima tova (may you be sealed for good), Have an easy fast, or Have a meaningful fast.
- Send messages before sunset on the eve. Observant Jews do not use phones during the fast.
- No jokes, no food talk until the break fast. Keep it short and respectful.
- Asking a friend's forgiveness before Yom Kippur is a kind, meaningful message.
- Not everyone fasts for health reasons; wish a meaningful day rather than asking whether someone is fasting.
