About Wangala

Wangala is the harvest festival of the Garo people of Meghalaya and nearby areas, held in autumn after the rice harvest, usually in November. It thanks Saljong, the sun god, for a good harvest.

In the villages the festival begins with offerings of new rice and the first fruits, followed by days of music and dance. Long lines of dancers in feathered headdresses move to the beat of the dama, a long drum, and the sound of gongs and buffalo-horn trumpets.

The best-known celebration is the Hundred Drums Wangala Festival near Tura in the West Garo Hills, where groups from many villages play a hundred drums together. It draws visitors from all over the north-east and beyond.
