About Thrissur Pooram

Thrissur Pooram is the grandest temple festival of Kerala, held at the Vadakkunnathan Temple grounds in Thrissur on the day of the Pooram star in the Malayalam month of Medam, in April or May.

The festival was started in the late 1700s by Sakthan Thampuran, the ruler of Kochi, who brought the temples around Thrissur together for one shared festival. Two groups, Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi, lead the day, with smaller temples joining them.

Rows of caparisoned elephants carry the deities while hundreds of drummers play the Ilanjithara Melam. The two sides show colourful parasols in the Kudamattam, a friendly contest of umbrellas, and the night ends with a huge display of fireworks. People from all over Kerala and beyond come to watch.
