About Thingyan

Thingyan is the Myanmar water festival that leads into the traditional New Year in mid April. It usually runs for four days from about 13 April, and the New Year day follows.

Water is the heart of it: people splash and sprinkle each other to wash away the old year's misdeeds and start clean. Streets fill with music, decorated stages called pandals and cheerful crowds.

It is also a time of merit. Families wash Buddha images, visit monasteries, take precepts, release fish and birds, share mont lone yay paw, sweet rice balls with jaggery, and pay respect to elders by washing their hair.

How people celebrate Thingyan

  • Water splashing
  • Pandals with music and dance
  • Washing Buddha images
  • Mont lone yay paw rice balls
  • Paying respect to elders
  • Yellow padauk flowers
  • Merit making at monasteries

How to wish well

  • "Happy Thingyan" and "Happy New Year" both work. Wish people a fresh, clean start.
  • Greet elders with respect and offer to help them with the hair washing ritual.
  • Keep water play gentle and kind; not everyone wants to get wet.
