About Tet

Tet Nguyen Dan, or simply Tet, is the Vietnamese Lunar New Year and the biggest festival in Vietnam. It falls on the first day of the lunar calendar, usually in late January or February.

Tet welcomes spring and honours family and ancestors. Families clean and decorate their homes, offer food at the family altar and gather for a big meal on New Year's Eve.

Homes fill with yellow apricot blossoms in the south and pink peach blossoms in the north, kumquat trees and trays of candied fruit. People eat banh chung or banh tet, give lucky money in red envelopes and visit relatives, teachers and friends in the first days of the year.

Tet is celebrated across Vietnam and by Vietnamese communities around the world.

How people celebrate Tet

  • Cleaning and decorating the home
  • Offerings to ancestors
  • Banh chung and banh tet
  • Apricot and peach blossoms
  • Lucky money (li xi)
  • First visitor of the year (xong dat)
  • Visiting relatives and teachers

How to wish well

  • Say "Chuc mung nam moi" (Happy New Year) or "An khang thinh vuong" (peace and prosperity).
  • Wish elders first, with respect. Children wish grandparents health and long life.
  • Avoid talk of bad luck, illness or arguments during the first days.
  • Red and yellow are lucky colours; give lucky money in a red envelope with new notes.
