About Tamil New Year

Puthandu, the Tamil New Year, is the first day of the Tamil month of Chithirai, when the Sun enters Mesha. It usually falls on 14 April.

Homes are cleaned and a kolam is drawn at the door. Many families arrange a tray of fruit, flowers, gold and a mirror to see first thing in the morning, then visit the temple.

Lunch often includes mango pachadi, a dish that is sweet, sour and bitter at once, a reminder that a year holds every taste. It is celebrated in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Sri Lanka and by Tamils worldwide.

How people celebrate Tamil New Year
