About Samvatsari

Samvatsari is the last and holiest day of Paryushan for Svetambara Jains. It falls on the fourth (for some, fifth) day of the bright half of Bhadrapada, in August or September, and is the Jain day of forgiveness.

Many fast for the whole day and spend hours in the Samvatsari pratikraman, a long prayer of reflection on the faults of the past year towards every living being.

Afterwards Jains ask forgiveness of everyone they know, in person, by phone and by message, with the words Micchami Dukkadam: may all the wrong I have done be without effect, or simply, please forgive me. Digambara Jains do the same on Kshamavani after Das Lakshan.

How people celebrate Samvatsari

  • Full day fast
  • Samvatsari pratikraman
  • Asking forgiveness of everyone
  • Khamemi savve jiva prayer
  • Visiting elders and the derasar
  • Breaking the fast the next morning (parna)

How to wish well

  • Micchami Dukkadam is the message of the day. It asks forgiveness; it is not a happy greeting, so do not add Happy.
  • Be specific when you can: a sincere sorry for a real hurt means more than a forwarded line.
  • It is good to reply to a Micchami Dukkadam with your own, so forgiveness goes both ways.
  • Customers and colleagues also send it, so a short, sincere business message is welcome.
