  • May the Lord bless you as you walk with Him from the joy of Palm Sunday to the joy of Easter.

  • May His humility teach us to serve, and His courage teach us to stand for what is right.

  • As He entered Jerusalem in peace, may He enter every troubled place in your life with peace.

  • May the green palm be a sign of the life He brings to all who welcome Him.

  • Lord, as You came to Jerusalem, come to our homes and stay with us. A blessed Palm Sunday.

  • May you walk with Christ this week, from the road of palms to the empty tomb.

  • As the stones would have cried out if the crowd had been silent, may our lives cry out His praise.

  • May this Holy Week heal what is hurting in you and renew what is tired.

  • Lord, make us a people who welcome You every day, not only with palms on Sunday.

About Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter and the first day of Holy Week. Christians remember the day Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, and the crowds spread cloaks and palm branches on the road, singing Hosanna.

Churches bless palm branches, or olive, willow or coconut fronds where palms do not grow, and hold a procession before the service. The reading of the Passion often follows, so the day holds both joy and the first shadow of Good Friday.

Many families fold the blessed palms into small crosses and keep them at home all year. In Kerala the day is called Oshana Sunday, in the Philippines people bring woven palaspas to be blessed, and in Poland and Lithuania colourful palms are made of dried flowers and willow.

How people celebrate Palm Sunday

  • Blessing of palms
  • Palm procession and Hosanna hymns
  • Reading of the Passion
  • Folding palm crosses
  • Keeping the blessed palm at home
  • Woven palaspas in the Philippines

How to wish well

  • A blessed Palm Sunday or Hosanna are the usual words. Happy Palm Sunday is also common and fine.
  • It opens Holy Week, so keep wishes warm but gentle. Save the big Easter cheer for Easter Sunday.
  • A short line from the Gospel, such as Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, makes a lovely status.
