Orthodox Easter blessings and prayers (11)

Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and to those in the tombs granting life. A blessed Pascha.
May the light of the Resurrection drive every darkness from your heart.
May the Risen Lord grant you health, peace and many years.
As the myrrh-bearing women found the empty tomb, may you find hope where you least expect it.
May the joy of this feast of feasts stay with you all year.
May the Holy Fire of Jerusalem light your home and your faith.
May the Lord bless your Easter basket, your table and all who sit at it.
May your fast be crowned with joy and your prayers with peace.
Let no one fear death, for the death of the Saviour has set us free. May this ancient hope be yours today.
May the Resurrection bring forgiveness and peace to all, as the old hymn says: let us forgive all things.
May Christ, risen from the dead, fill your life with new life.

About Orthodox Easter

Orthodox Easter, or Pascha, is the feast of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the greatest day of the year for Orthodox Christians. Orthodox churches set its date with the Julian calendar, so it often falls one to five weeks after the Western Easter, and sometimes on the same day.

It ends the seven weeks of Great Lent and Holy Week. Near midnight on Holy Saturday the church goes dark, then a single flame is passed from candle to candle as the priest sings Christ is risen. Bells ring, and people greet each other with Christ is risen and Truly He is risen for forty days.

Families bring baskets of food to be blessed: red eggs, kulich or paska bread, cheese paskha in Russia, tsoureki in Greece. They crack red eggs against each other, carry the flame home and share a great meal after the long fast, often with roast lamb in Greece.

How people celebrate Orthodox Easter

Midnight Resurrection service
Passing the Holy Fire from candle to candle
Red-dyed eggs and egg tapping
Blessing Easter baskets
Kulich, paska and tsoureki
Breaking the Lenten fast
Saying Christ is risen for forty days

How to wish well

The greeting is Christ is risen, and the reply is Truly He is risen (or Indeed He is risen). Learn the reply in your friend's language.
Check the date: Orthodox Easter is often later than Western Easter. Wish on the right Sunday.
Send wishes on Saturday evening or Sunday. Many will be in church past midnight.
Gentle jokes about the end of the fast and egg tapping are fine; keep the Resurrection itself respectful.

Questions about Orthodox Easter

When is Orthodox Easter 2027?

Orthodox Easter 2027 is on Sunday 2 May 2027.

Why is Orthodox Easter on a different date?

Orthodox churches calculate Easter with the Julian calendar and the old rule that it follows Passover, so it is often one to five weeks later than Western Easter.

What do you say on Orthodox Easter?

Christ is risen! The reply is Truly He is risen! In Greek, Christos Anesti and Alithos Anesti; in Russian, Khristos voskrese and Voistinu voskrese.

Yes, in some years the two fall on the same Sunday, as in 2025 and 2028.
