About Onam
Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala and the biggest celebration of Malayalis everywhere. It falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August or September), and its main day, Thiruvonam, is the day of the Thiruvonam star.
The festival remembers the good king Mahabali, often called Maveli, whose reign is told as a time when everyone was equal and happy. People believe he visits his people every year on Thiruvonam.
The celebration runs for ten days from Atham. Families lay a flower carpet called pookalam at the door, wear new clothes, swing on oonjal and sit down to the Onam sadya, a feast of many dishes on a banana leaf. Snake boat races, pulikali tiger dancers and thiruvathira dances fill the season.
Onam is celebrated by people of every faith across Kerala, and by Malayalis in the Gulf, Singapore, Malaysia, the UK, the US, Canada and Australia.
