About Nuakhai

Nuakhai is the harvest festival of western Odisha, held on the fifth day of the bright half of Bhadrapada, in August or September. Nua means new and khai means eating: the day the new rice of the season is first eaten.

The first grains are offered to the family deity and to Maa Samaleswari of Sambalpur at a chosen auspicious time. Then the family eats the nua together, and the young touch the feet of their elders, who bless them. Old quarrels are set aside.

People who work far away travel home for the day. The evening is for Nuakhai Bhetghat, visits and greetings, with Sambalpuri songs and dances such as Dalkhai, new clothes and festive food.

How people celebrate Nuakhai

  • Offering the new rice to the deity
  • Eating the nua together as a family
  • Juhar to elders for their blessing
  • Nuakhai Bhetghat visits
  • Sambalpuri songs and Dalkhai dance

How to wish well
