About Mahavir Jayanti

Mahavir Jayanti, also called Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, is the most important festival of the Jain faith. It marks the birth of Bhagwan Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara, born in the sixth century BCE in Kundagram, in present-day Bihar.

Mahavir left a royal life to seek truth, and taught the path of ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truth), asteya (not stealing), brahmacharya (self-control) and aparigraha (non-attachment). His message of kindness to every living being is at the heart of Jain life.

Jains visit temples, bathe the idol of Mahavir in the abhishek, and take part in peaceful processions. Many fast, give to charity, feed animals and help at hospitals. It is a gazetted holiday in India.
