About Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong is a Thai festival held on the full moon night of the twelfth month of the Thai lunar calendar, usually in November, when rivers are high after the rains.

People make a krathong, a small float of banana trunk and banana leaves folded into a lotus shape, decorated with flowers, a candle and incense sticks, and set it on the water. It is a way of thanking the water goddess, letting go of bad feelings and making a wish for the year ahead.

Rivers, canals and lakes glow with thousands of small lights. In Chiang Mai the festival meets Yi Peng, when paper lanterns rise into the sky. Many couples float a krathong together as a wish for lasting love.

How to wish well

  • Say "Suk san wan Loy Krathong" (Happy Loy Krathong).
