About Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration of African American family, community and culture, held from 26 December to 1 January.

It was created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga. Its name comes from the Swahili phrase for "first fruits" of the harvest.

Each day honours one of seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. Families light one candle a day on the kinara, share a feast called Karamu on 31 December and give simple, often handmade gifts.

How people celebrate Kwanzaa

  • Lighting the kinara
  • The seven principles
  • Unity cup
  • Karamu feast on 31 December
  • Handmade gifts
  • Music, stories and dance

How to wish well

  • Say "Happy Kwanzaa" or "Heri za Kwanzaa".
  • On each day people greet with "Habari gani?" (What is the news?) and answer with that day's principle.
  • Many families celebrate both Christmas and Kwanzaa; the two are not in conflict.
  • Mention unity, purpose or creativity to make your message personal.
