About Krishna Janmashtami

Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, born at midnight in a prison cell in Mathura on the eighth day of the waning moon, in August or September. It is also called Gokulashtami, Krishna Jayanthi and Krishnashtami.

Stories say baby Krishna was carried across the stormy Yamuna to Gokul, where Yashoda and Nanda raised him. His childhood of butter stealing, flute playing and protecting the village, and his teaching of the Bhagavad Gita, are remembered on this night.

Devotees fast through the day, sing bhajans, decorate a cradle for Bal Gopal and celebrate at midnight with makhan mishri, panjiri and sweets. Children dress as Krishna and Radha. Maharashtra celebrates Dahi Handi, with human pyramids breaking a pot of curd, and Tamil homes draw little footprints from the door to the altar.

Janmashtami is celebrated across India, especially in Mathura and Vrindavan, Dwarka, Udupi and Puri, and in Nepal, Bangladesh and Indian communities worldwide.

How people celebrate Krishna Janmashtami

Jokes about butter and naughty Kanha are loved; keep jokes kind and away from the Lord himself.
