About Kartik Purnima

Kartik Purnima is the full moon of the month of Kartik, about fifteen days after Diwali, usually in November. It closes the holy month of Kartik, a time of early baths, lamps and prayer.

Many remember it as the day Lord Shiva defeated the demon Tripurasura, which is why it is also called Tripurari Purnima. In Varanasi it is Dev Deepawali, the Diwali of the gods, when the ghats along the Ganga are lit with lakhs of clay lamps.

Devotees take a holy dip in rivers, float lamps on the water, give food and lamps as charity and visit temples. The Pushkar fair in Rajasthan reaches its peak, Odisha keeps Boita Bandana with little boats set afloat in memory of old sea traders, and Sikhs celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti on the same full moon in most years.

How people celebrate Kartik Purnima

  • Holy dip in the Ganga and other rivers
  • Floating clay lamps on the water
  • Lakhs of diyas on the ghats of Varanasi
  • Deep daan, the gift of lamps
  • Tulsi and Vishnu puja
  • Pushkar fair in Rajasthan
  • Boita Bandana boats in Odisha

How to wish well

  • Send wishes in the evening, when the lamps are lit and the moon rises.
  • "Happy Dev Deepawali" suits friends from Varanasi and Uttar Pradesh.
  • Sikh friends celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti on the same day, so a Gurpurab wish suits them better.
  • Keep it devotional and bright: lamps, the river and the full moon.
