About Karthigai Deepam

Karthigai Deepam is the Tamil festival of lamps. It falls on the day the Krittika star rises with the full moon in the Tamil month of Karthigai, in November or December.

It honours Lord Shiva as an endless column of light. At Thiruvannamalai a huge lamp, the Maha Deepam, is lit on top of the Arunachala hill at dusk and can be seen for miles.

At home, families draw kolam and place rows of small clay lamps at the door, on the steps and along the walls. Sweets like pori urundai and appam are made, and the lamps glow for the evening.

How people celebrate Karthigai Deepam

  • Send wishes in the evening, around the time the lamps are lit.
