About Kannada Rajyotsava

Kannada Rajyotsava, also called Karnataka Rajyotsava, is the formation day of the state of Karnataka. On 1 November 1956 the Kannada-speaking regions of South India were brought together into one state, then called Mysore State and renamed Karnataka in 1973.

The day is a public holiday in Karnataka. The red and yellow Kannada flag flies on homes, shops and offices, the state honours achievers with the Rajyotsava awards, and schools, colleges and neighbourhoods hold programmes of Kannada songs, dance and poetry.

It is a celebration of the Kannada language and its literature, as well as of Karnataka's culture, from Mysuru and Hampi to the coast and the coffee hills. Kannadigas around the world mark the day too.

How people celebrate Kannada Rajyotsava

  • Hoisting the red and yellow Kannada flag
