About Indonesia Independence Day

Indonesia celebrates Independence Day, Hari Kemerdekaan, on 17 August. On that morning in 1945 the Proclamation of Independence was read in Jakarta.

In the weeks before, villages and city neighbourhoods paint gates, hang red and white flags and bunting along every lane and plan the lomba Tujuh Belasan, the much-loved community games.

On the day there are flag ceremonies at schools and offices, and then the fun: krupuk-eating races, sack races, marbles on spoons and climbing the greased panjat pinang pole for prizes. Neighbours eat together in a spirit of gotong royong, working together.
