About Independence Day (India)
Independence Day is celebrated in India on 15 August. On this day in 1947 India became free after nearly two centuries of British rule.
Freedom came after a long struggle by millions of people from every part of the country, led by Mahatma Gandhi and many brave women and men. The day honours them all.
The national flag is hoisted at the Red Fort in Delhi, and in schools, offices and homes across the country. People sing patriotic songs, children take part in parades and many families fly kites, a tradition loved in Delhi and the north.
It is a national holiday in India. Indian communities around the world mark it with flag hoisting at embassies and community events.
