About Hanuman Jayanti

Hanuman Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Hanuman, the devoted friend and messenger of Lord Rama, son of Anjana and Vayu, the wind god. In North India it falls on the full moon of Chaitra, in March or April, a few days after Ram Navami.

Hanuman is loved for his strength, loyalty, humility and courage. Stories tell how he leapt across the sea to find Sita and carried a whole mountain to bring the Sanjeevani herb that saved Lakshmana.

Devotees visit Hanuman temples at dawn, offer sindoor, jasmine oil, red flowers and boondi laddoos, and recite the Hanuman Chalisa and Sundar Kand. Many fast for the day.

The date differs by region: Tamil Nadu celebrates Hanumath Jayanthi on the new moon of Margazhi, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Vaishakha dashami after a forty-day vow, and Karnataka in Margashirsha.

How people celebrate Hanuman Jayanti

  • Dawn visits to Hanuman temples
  • Sindoor and jasmine oil offered to the idol
  • Hanuman Chalisa and Sundar Kand recitals
  • Boondi laddoos as prasad
  • Fasting for the day
  • Processions with saffron flags

How to wish well

  • Send wishes early in the morning, when devotees head to the temple.
  • "Jai Bajrangbali" and "Jai Hanuman" are the most loved greetings.
  • Tamil, Telugu and Kannada friends may celebrate on a different day, so check before wishing.
  • Keep wishes devotional and positive; this is not a day for jokes.
