About Hanukkah

Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, lasts eight nights from the 25th of the Hebrew month of Kislev, usually in late November or December. It begins at sunset the evening before the first day.

It remembers the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the second century BCE. Tradition tells of a small jar of oil, enough for one day, that kept the Temple lamp burning for eight days.

Each night families light one more candle on the menorah, or hanukkiah, and place it by a window to share the light. They sing blessings, play with a spinning dreidel, eat foods fried in oil such as latkes and sufganiyot, and give small gifts or coins called gelt.

How people celebrate Hanukkah

  • Lighting the menorah each night
  • Placing the menorah in a window
  • Saying the blessings
  • Playing dreidel
  • Latkes and sufganiyot
  • Hanukkah gelt for children

How to wish well

  • Happy Hanukkah or Chag Sameach (happy holiday) suits everyone. Chag Urim Sameach means happy festival of lights.
  • Hanukkah has eight nights, so a wish on any night is welcome, and a wish on the first night is extra kind.
  • Spelling Hanukkah or Chanukah are both correct.
  • Hanukkah is a joyful festival, so light, friendly messages about candles, latkes and dreidels fit well.
