About Halloween

Halloween falls on 31 October, the evening before All Saints' Day. Its name comes from All Hallows' Eve.

It grew from old autumn harvest customs in Ireland and Scotland, where people lit fires and wore disguises at the turn of the season.

Today families carve pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, children dress up and go trick-or-treating, and friends hold costume parties and watch spooky films.

It is most popular in the United States, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Australia, and is now enjoyed in many other countries too.

How people celebrate Halloween

  • Carving jack-o'-lanterns
  • Trick-or-treating
  • Costume parties
  • Decorating porches
  • Spooky stories and films
  • Apple bobbing

How to wish well

  • Keep it fun and friendly. Gentle spooky jokes work well; avoid anything truly frightening for small children.
  • For colleagues and customers, a short, cheerful wish is enough.
  • Some families do not celebrate Halloween for personal or faith reasons, so wish only those who enjoy it.
  • A card with a photo of your child's costume makes a lovely message for grandparents.
