About Gandhi Jayanti
Gandhi Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. India remembers him as the Father of the Nation, and people lovingly call him Bapu.
Gandhi ji led India's freedom struggle with satyagraha, a path of truth and non-violence. He lived simply, wore khadi he spun himself and worked for the poor, for cleanliness and for harmony between all faiths.
On 2 October people offer flowers at his statues and at Raj Ghat in Delhi, sing his favourite bhajans such as Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram and Vaishnav Jan To, and take part in cleaning drives and prayer meetings. The world marks the day as the International Day of Non-Violence.
The same day is also the birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri, India's second Prime Minister, remembered for the call "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan".

How to wish well
- Gandhi Jayanti is a day of respect, not a party. "Happy Gandhi Jayanti" is common, and a line of tribute is just as good.
- Leave out jokes and politics. A wish about truth, peace, simplicity or service fits best.
- Be careful with quotes found online: many words said to be Gandhi's are not his. A message in your own words is safer.
- You can remember Lal Bahadur Shastri in the same message, since he was born on 2 October too.
