About Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha, the festival of sacrifice, is celebrated by Muslims around the world on the tenth day of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. It falls on the day after the pilgrims of Hajj stand on the plain of Arafah.

The day remembers the faith of Prophet Ibrahim, who was ready to give up what he loved most for God, and God's mercy to him and his son Ismail. Its lesson is trust in God, patience and giving.

Families begin the day with the Eid prayer, wear new clothes and visit relatives. Those who can afford it offer a sacrifice and share the meat with family, neighbours and people in need. In India it is often called Bakrid, in Malaysia Hari Raya Haji and in Turkey Kurban Bayramı.

How people celebrate Eid al-Adha

  • Fasting on the Day of Arafah
  • Takbir on Eid morning
  • Eid prayer
  • New clothes
  • Sharing food with neighbours and the poor
  • Visiting family
  • Eidi for children

How to wish well

  • Eid Mubarak and Eid al-Adha Mubarak both suit everyone. Many reply Khair Mubarak.
  • Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum, may God accept from us and from you, is a lovely line for devout friends.
  • Remember friends on Hajj in your message: may your Hajj be accepted.
  • Keep funny messages about food, visits and new clothes, never about the faith or the sacrifice.
