About Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu, falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, usually in June. It is a public holiday in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.
It is often linked to the poet Qu Yuan, who lived more than 2,000 years ago. People say fishermen raced their boats and threw rice into the river to honour him, which became the boat races and zongzi of today.
Families eat zongzi, sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves with sweet or savoury fillings, hang mugwort and calamus on doors and give children bright silk sachets and five-colour threads for good health. Long dragon boats race to the beat of drums on rivers and harbours.
