About Bonalu
Bonalu is the state festival of Telangana, celebrated in the Telugu month of Ashadam (July or August), mainly in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. It honours the Mother Goddess as Mahankali, Yellamma, Pochamma and other forms, and thanks her for protecting families.
Bonam means a meal. Women carry a decorated pot of rice cooked with milk and jaggery on their heads, its top covered with neem leaves, turmeric, kumkum and a small lamp, and offer it at the temple. Drums, folk songs and the dance of Potharaju, the Goddess's brother, lead the processions.
The festival starts at Golconda Fort, moves to the Ujjaini Mahankali Temple in Secunderabad for Lashkar Bonalu, and ends with the Lal Darwaza Bonalu in the Old City. On the last day, Rangam, a prophecy for the year, is spoken at the temple, and the Ghatam procession closes the season. Telangana gives a public holiday for it.
