About Bihu
Bihu is the great festival of Assam, held three times a year. Rongali or Bohag Bihu in mid April is the biggest: it marks the Assamese new year, the start of spring and the sowing season. Bhogali or Magh Bihu in January is the harvest feast, and Kati or Kongali Bihu in October is a quiet evening of lamps in the fields.
Rongali Bihu begins with Goru Bihu, when cattle are bathed and honoured on the last day of the old year. Manuh Bihu on the first day of Bohag is for people: new clothes, blessings from elders and the gift of a hand-woven gamosa.
Young and old dance the Bihu dance to the dhol, the pepa and the gogona. Groups go from house to house singing husori, and homes serve jolpan, pitha and laru. The celebrations go on for about a week.
Bihu is celebrated across Assam and by Assamese people in nearby states, the rest of India and abroad.
